I see it everyday – bad resumes written by good people who deserve better. Bad resumes that, unbeknownst to them, will do their job search more harm than good. Bad resumes that will actually lengthen their job search & repel their perfect job rather than attract it. Is this what you want for your search?
Let’s review these issues one by one. First, what makes a resume “bad”? Well, there are a lot of things, but here are just a few of the more important ones:
-
A bland layout or one that looks like millions of other resumes
-
The wrong resume format for your career situation (hint: a functional format is rarely the answer & can derail your search results overnight)
-
Punctuation, grammar, or word choice errors
-
Lack of career summary
-
Poor to no key word loading
-
Lack of career branding
-
Lack of job search positioning
-
Few to no achievements
-
Too much focus on responsibilities
Now, how can a bad resume lengthen your job search? Simple – by failing to get you interviews. If your resume lacks one or more of the above elements, chances are it will perform poorly. What does that mean? Well, it won’t earn “good grades” from the digital scanning systems that employers, recruiters, & job boards use to screen out poor candidates & source good ones. These systems are designed to count up the number of times certain key words show up in your resume; hence a resume that lacks these words will almost certainly fail to make it into the “to be interviewed” pile of resumes that soar to the top of the key word rankings.
And, even worse, this also means that a human being won’t likely even see your resume – you’ll disappear into a black hole of applicants while great jobs go to other candidates. You will apply to job after online job yet your search will go nowhere fast. Does this sound familiar?
